Sinhagad fort which is just on the cusp of Pune city, is seen as the gateway to the Sahyadri mountains of the Western Ghats of India. Sinhagad has seen many valiant battles notable among which is the battle of Kondhana lead by Tanaji Malusare in 1670 A.D. The fort was renamed to Sinhagad (Lion’s fort) by Shivaji Maharaj, in remembrance of Tanaji for his bravery and sacrifice.
Now a days, more and more people turning towards remote forest and mountain trails for getting away from the chaos of road running. Sinhagad and its surrounding Ghera (circumference) is deﬁnitely the perfect home for this budding community. It gives runners an opportunity to connect with the heritage place while at the same time the enjoyment of runs in the real wilderness, the natural trail paths, technical climbs, fresh air, sounds of the wild, that every ideal trail runner hunts for.
On June 30th 2019, Pune based Western Ghats Running Foundation (WGRF), have come up with a mountain and trail running race at the beginning of monsoon season on Sinhgad fort and the valleys that surround the fortress.
Sinhagad Epic Trail, as it is called, will consist of 3 categories. All categories are completely original, and will give a fresh breath of air for runners seeking newer challenges. As this is the 1st edition of the race, organizers have given suﬃcient time for runners to ﬁnish their respective category, also at the same time keeping it tough.
The race will start/end at Hotel Kondhana Guesthouse, Atkarwadi, Ghera Sinhagad, Pune, India.
The 42Km SkyRace is also a UTMB (Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc) qualiﬁer race oﬀering 2 points for ﬁnishers to become eligible to take part in their 2020 edition.
